About

Join the staff of one of the country’s most prestigious student newspapers.

Working for The Daily Free Press is an invaluable experience for any student looking to build a professional portfolio. Published samples of writing, photography and digital media are a must-have on any prospective journalist’s resume, and at the FreeP, you’ll have the opportunity to see your work published and to prove to future employers that you have what it takes. Staff members cover a variety of city and campus events, from elections to protests to sporting events to concerts. Past staffers have attended former U.S. President Barack Obama’s visit to Boston, sat in the TD Garden press box and met famous musicians touring in our city.

Working at the FreeP is a fantastic opportunity to network with other accomplished journalists, and doing so will give you the experience and make the connections that will launch your career. FreeP alumni presently work for the Associated Press, The New York Times, The Washington Post, NPR, The Boston Globe, The San Francisco Chronicle, The Wall Street Journal, PBS, NBC, The Onion, ESPN.com, Rolling Stone, The Los Angeles Times and many more. Our alumni include a Pulitzer Prize winner and the editor of People Magazine. The FreeP itself has won several national accolades for excellence in college journalism, including third place in the Society of Professional Journalists’ Best All-Around College Daily Student Newspaper in the Northeast United States and, most recently, New England College Newspaper of the Year for 2018-2019.

In the FreeP office, you’ll learn the foundations of traditional journalism as well as the groundbreaking, fast-paced evolution of the new media world — all in a hands-on environment. We turn over our staff at the beginning of each semester, so you’ll have plenty of chances to move up to more prestigious positions or to experiment with the paper’s many facets. Participation is on a volunteer basis and is open to all BU students regardless of major or level of experience.

If you’d like to join our staff, please fill out an application below. All applicants will work with the editor of their chosen section as a contributing reporter/photographer/etc. for one month after receiving notification of their acceptance, during which they will undergo training and receive feedback. Contributors will then officially join staff after producing consistent work and demonstrating a willingness to learn as well as, hopefully, a passion for what they have been doing. Applications rolling in throughout the semester will continue to be reviewed.
